Frequently Asked Questions

Getting started in Daventry

Where can I learn Taekwondo in Daventry?

Our main Daventry classes meet at Daventry Leisure Centre, Lodge Road, Daventry, NN11 4FP. We also have ladies-only classes in Daventry, and classes in Woodford Halse, with a sister club in Banbury.

What age can children start Taekwondo?

Children can usually start from around four or five, but every child is different. Our Cubs class is especially for four- and five-year-olds and meets on Fridays at 4pm during term time only. Some children may be ready for a suitable family class instead. We offer three free trial sessions so you can see how your child gets on.

Can adults start Taekwondo with no previous experience?

Yes. You do not need a martial arts background to join. We introduce the skills step by step, so you can learn at a pace appropriate to you.

Can parents and children train together?

Yes—parents and children can train together in any class suitable for their grades. It is a lovely way to learn something new and spend active time together.

Do you offer ladies-only Taekwondo classes?

Yes. Our friendly, supportive ladies-only classes meet on Fridays from 10.30–11.30am, all year round, in the Saxon Suite at Daventry Leisure Centre; and on Mondays from 12 noon–1pm, during term time only, at the Band Hall, Ashby Road, Daventry, NN11 0PN. Classes are small and away from onlookers, and beginners are welcome.

When are the Daventry classes?

In term time, children’s beginners’ classes are at 5pm on Wednesdays and Fridays. Adult and young people’s beginners train at 7pm on Wednesdays and 6pm on Fridays. The Cubs class meets at 4pm on Fridays in term time only. There are also intermediate, advanced and daytime ladies’ classes. Our school-holiday timetable differs, so check the Home page and Calendar for the current times and belt groups.

Your first lessons

Can I try a class before joining?

Yes. Your first three lessons are free taster sessions, with no commitment. They give you a chance to meet us, try the training and decide whether Taekwondo is right for you.

What should I wear and bring to my first lesson?

Wear comfortable clothes that let you move freely, such as a T-shirt and jogging bottoms, and bring a drink of water. We train in bare feet. You do not need to buy a uniform for your trial. Remove jewellery before training and let your instructor know about anything that may affect your participation.

Do I need to be fit or flexible before starting?

No. You can build fitness and flexibility through regular training—you do not need to arrive able to do the splits! We introduce exercises gradually and encourage you to work at an appropriate level.

Is Taekwondo suitable for someone who lacks confidence?

Taekwondo can be a great way to build confidence through learning new skills and working towards achievable goals. Everyone starts somewhere, and we encourage students as they develop at their own pace.

Can I train if I have an injury or a physical limitation?

We can often adapt training to what you can comfortably manage. Tell your instructor about anything that affects your participation, listen to your body and let us know if an exercise does not suit you. Our three free trial sessions give you a chance to see how you get on.

Training and progression

Can you accommodate students with disabilities or additional needs?

Yes—we welcome children and adults with additional needs. We’d welcome a chat about any support you or your child might need and which class would suit you best. Our three free trial sessions give everyone a chance to see how they get on.

What is TAGB Taekwondo?

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art known for its kicking techniques. Our training also includes hand techniques, patterns, sparring and theory. TAGB stands for the Taekwondo Association of Great Britain. We teach the ITF style using the TAGB syllabus.

Will I have to spar or take part in competitions?

Competitions are optional. Sparring is introduced gradually, starting with games and learning control, before developing into practice with a partner. From blue belt upwards, sparring is a required part of training.

How are students supported in class?

Unlike many martial arts clubs, we have a large team of qualified instructors, assistant instructors, junior instructors and classroom assistants. This means we can often divide classes into smaller groups according to belt level, giving students more individual attention and helping everyone progress at their own pace.

Our junior instructors are carefully selected and complete an assessed training programme before qualifying. We take pride in the quality of our teaching and the support we give every student, from complete beginners to advanced black belts.

Can I join if I have trained in another club or martial art?

Yes. We will assess your previous experience, current ability and how long a break you have had, then place you at an appropriate level. Bring details of your previous training so we can help you settle into the right class.

How often can I grade, and how long does a black belt take?

We hold around three or four gradings a year. Students can grade at three-month intervals up to blue belt, then at six-month intervals, provided they are ready. Adults often progress more quickly than children. The minimum time to black belt is three and a half years, although most students take longer. Your instructor will guide you.

Costs, uniform and equipment

How much do Taekwondo lessons cost?

For one lesson a week, monthly fees are £24 for under-10s, £27.50 for ages 10–15 and £30 for adults aged 16+. Unlimited training is £36, £40 and £45 per month respectively. Your first three trial lessons are free. Uniform, licensing and grading costs are separate.

Do you offer family discounts?

Yes. When paying by monthly standing order, the most expensive student in a family household pays full price and subsequent students receive 50% off. We cap household fees at £55 a month for once-weekly training and £75 a month for unlimited training.

What uniform and equipment will I need, and when?

You can try the classes before buying a uniform. Your instructor will explain which dobok (Taekwondo suit) is suitable and when you need equipment such as sparring protection. Please ask before buying: training and grading equipment must meet the club’s requirements. We carry a lot of uniform in stock and can help you order.

How do I book my free trial?

Choose “Book a Free Trial Period” in the menu to arrange your three free taster lessons. You can also call, text or WhatsApp us on 07799 647056. We look forward to welcoming you to Daventry Tigers.
